After a series of fortunate events ended my raiding career, The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss was placed in my hands with the instructions, “Just read this chapter.”  One amiable robbery later I was hooked.

Then I waited.  The sequel took four years and the third installment will probably take even longer.  In the meantime, Rothfuss submitted a short novella for the Rogues anthology, edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois and due out on June 17th.  An excerpt from the story, “The Lightning Tree” featuring fan favorite Bast, was posted today at Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist.  Here’s a sample:

Finally Bast turned to look the boy over. He was no more than eight or nine, well-dressed, and plumper than most of the other town’s children. He carried a wad of white cloth in his hand.

The boy swallowed nervously. “I need a lie.”

We’ll take a look at the story and the whole anthology in the coming months.
