It’s already a big week for Jem fans. Deadline revealed that Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers, Whip It) had been cast in the upcoming film remake Jem and the Holograms. Then, the next day, The Hollywood Reporter announced the casting of eighties darling Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club).
Nobody seems to know who they’ll be playing. Depending on the blogger, either is an obvious choice for Synergy, the artificially intelligent holographic computer that makes the Holograms possible. Others speculate one or the other as a member of rival band The Misfits. It’s certainly possible. Both have released albums and Lewis certainly has the swagger. But they’re both twice as old as the women cast in the title roles.
Whomever they play, their mere presence is probably enough to draw the attention of a few jaded haters who’d dismissed the production as totally disconnected from the original. The fan service is certainly appreciated.
