‘Play It Again, Dick’ – The Meta-cular Return of the Lovingly Goofy ‘Veronica Mars’ Kickstarter Videos

dick-casablancas-ryan-hansenRob Thomas is making a webseries around Ryan Hansen/Dick Casablancas trying to cash in on the new attention on Veronica Mars to get his own series spin-off going. Filming has just finished on Play It Again, Dick, and Buzzfeed has announced the other Veronica Mars cast who will be making appearances. Pretty much everyone you’d want to see, with the exception of Tina Majorino who played Mac, is appearing as a version of themselves and/or their character on the show.

As I’ve mentioned before on here, I am a fan of Veronica Mars. I even donated a small amount to the Kickstarter campaign that enabled the movie. Because of this, I was privy to all the making-of videos and updates that the cast and crew cranked out to show their appreciation for fan support. Thomas has likened the new webseries to the tone of Party Down which Ryan Hansen was also in, but I suspect we can see a much more direct representation through the videos Thomas and co. made to advertise the Kickstarter campaign and thank supporters after. If that’s the case, I’m excited to see what the series has in store.

One tidbit that Thomas highlighted during the making of the Veronica Mars movie was how game Ryan Hansen was for anything. He even donned an old, smelly, heavy gorilla costume for a scene after he had finished his shots as Dick. The videos he stars in for the Kickstarter campaign have played off the egotism of Dick Casablancas and ascribed it to Hansen, though his good-hearted nature constantly sparkles through. I’m fully enticed by the possibilities of how Hansen/Casablancas would envision the tropes and characters of Veronica Mars.

This promises to be all sorts of tongue-in-cheek goofy. Though Veronica Mars is dramatic in tone, Thomas and his actors are all skilled with comedy, and I can’t wait to see them play off of each other in self-mockery.
