IDW Publishing, home of other Hasbro comic reboots like GI Joe, My Little Pony, and Transformers, announced last week that Jem and the Holograms would get an ongoing series next March.
It’s the 21st century, and Jem and The Holograms are 21st century girls! Meet Jerrica Benton, the gifted singer of The Holograms, a band that has the right look and the right sound… But one thing is holding them back—Jerrica’s crippling stage fright. Luckily, Jerrica is about to find help in the most unlikely of places when she discovers a forgotten present left by her father. And what she finds is truly outrageous!
Back in 2011, Campbell posted several Jem redesigns which were enthusiastically reviewed by Comics Alliance. The designs for Jem, Kimber, Aja, and Shana are somewhat similar to those on the cover of issue #1 (above). Campbell announced his involvement on tumblr with, “i am drawing the Jem comic from IDW,” accompanied by three images, including Mistfits frontwoman Pizzazz.
Kelly and Ross discussed the upcoming series, updating an eighties classic, and responses to the announcement on the 3 Chicks Review Comics podcast Monday. Thompson has a lot to say about pop icons, entertainment facades, and creating “super-cosplayable” characters. You should check it out.
The comic is bound to generate interest for and benefit from buzz about John M. Chu’s Jem and the Holograms coming to theaters in October.
The update looks solid. Compare it to the 1986/87 comic from the United Kingdom 😉
