Once Upon a Time: Five Weeks and Counting

Once Upon a Time‘s midseason return is close enough that we can reasonably start thinking about it again. Sure, it’s five long weeks, yet, but we were excited for Season 4 longer than that. And at that point we hadn’t even see the show.

Queens of Darkness

On March 1st, we’ll reconnect with the residents of Storybrooke six weeks after the Spell of Shattered Sight was broken by Anna’s boundless infectious love. That puts their timeline roughly coincident with Rumplestiltskin’s encounter with Ursula in New York City at the end of episode 4×11.

So what can we expect from “Darkness of the Edge of Town”? Entertainment Tonight scored an interview with producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis and talked about the latter half of the fourth season.

“This back half is a lot about what makes a hero and what makes a villain, and it’s about trying to realize our happy endings.” – Kitsis

Mr. Gold’s been rounding up the so-called Queens of Darkness for a triumphant return to Storybrooke. We’ll get more back story for Maleficent, Cruella, and Ursula. We’ll explore their secret pasts with evil queen Regina. And we’ll discover how and why they ended up on Earth.

As always, Kitsis and Horowitz emphasize that the characters are their own interpretations and distance themselves from both the Disney originals and reinterpretations such as the recent, and recently reviewed, Maleficent. However, given the show’s penchant for visual nods and intertextuality, the Dinglehopper expects to find as many, if not more, references in this storyline as we did in the “Once is Frozen” arc.  After all, that’s half the fun of the show.

For folks who felt the major characters were sidelined early in the season, we have some good news from Horowitz.

“Those characters who have been there through the years will have their past, and their present, and their futures intertwined with the Queens of Darkness.”

It seems that while there will be new(er) characters, we’ll be getting more of Snow White, Prince Charming, Regina, and Emma Swan. As a Frozen fan, I can’t say I minded. But I’ll be happy to see the story come home as the season wraps up.

Here’s the teaser one more time…
