Breaking Down Exactly Why Jackson’s ‘The Hobbit’ Trilogy is No ‘Lord of the Rings’

HobbitMichael and I loved Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. We are in the group of people who would say the films improve on the books. However, The Hobbit brought so much disappointment and disengagement that we’ve never bothered to catch up with its sequels.

Now I have found a succinct, insightful video essay to explain exactly why The Hobbit failed with us, and it’s simply too good not to share. Sean Hickey, Film student at the Dublin Business School and a DBS Film Society member, provides the video essay. Hickey posits that on the surface, the films might look incredibly similar. But that’s exactly it–the surface is where those similarities stop, and Jackson becomes victim to self-imitation.
