Almost a year after the reboot was announced, we finally have a Jem and the Holograms trailer. Earlier this week, USA Today released several sneak peek images along with an interview with director John M. Chu. And Buzzfeed premiered the trailer yesterday.

As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ Jem and the Holograms, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.

If you were a fan of the cartoon back in its heyday, you’re probably shaking your head right now. Take another look at that tagline: “Every Generation Needs a Voice.” They reckon you found yours already.

We do get some fun things for ourselves, though. Molly Ringwald fulfills the role of Starlight House as aunt to Kimber and Jerrica and foster mother to Aja and Shana.

Juliette Lewis plays Erica Raymond, head of Starlight Music. Yes, you read that right. Eric, who was pretty creepy anyway, has been replaced with one of the best villains in cinema history.

And there’s even a crumb for Marshmallows. Ryan Hansen plays a small but cute role in the trailer. He’s brings his unbearable earnestness.

While I prefer Kelly Thompson and Sophie Campbell’s Jem and the Holograms comic, I’m not willing to dismiss the movie just yet. Adaptations are always tricky. Both reboots rely on social media and YouTube in particular to drive the plot. And here the Lady Gaga element allows the excitement of Jem to reverberate against over the top stardom.
