Star Wars Saturday: ILMxLab is Born

Virtual Reality is just around the corner thanks to the Oculus Rift. But now, it’s, like, relevant to me, since Industrial Light & Magic, the pioneering special effects company George Lucas brought into being, has added ILM Experience Lab (ILMxLab). ILMxLab is exploring and creating within the twin growing mediums of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

The tears of joy are getting caught in the headset. Is this thing water-resistant?

And they’ve announced they’ll be releasing Star Wars programs for both iPad AR and Oculus Rift VR around Christmas to coincide with the premiere of The Force Awakens.

What Star Wars-loving child (or adult really) hasn’t dreamed of just being inside the Star Wars universe? Sure, I’ll just take a stroll around Tatooine–I don’t need plot or mission or combat. Just let me be immersed. And that’s exactly the aim for ILMxLab.

ILM’s Experience Lab, or ILMxLab, will combine the technical assets of ILM, Skywalker Sound and Lucasfilm to create immersive experiences that allow fans to participate in their favorite movie worlds.

Hide from Stormtroopers on Tatooine as C-3PO in an AR experience from ILMxLab.

Be still, my heart.

They’ve already demoed a VR experience flying an X-Wing. My personal childhood fantasy is flying a Speeder Bike on Endor. ILMxLab, can we make that happen?
